Recycled roots under reduction and descent in the Casas-Alvero problem
For a Casas-Alvero polynomial , the type of is one less than the minimal number of roots of needed to meet every Hasse derivative . We show that the type does not increase under reduction modulo a prime and under the descent from degree to degree in characteristic . Consequently, if no Casas-Alvero polynomial of degree and type at most exists over , then none of degree and type at most exists in characteristic , for every . For the hypothesis is equivalent to for an explicit integer , and we show by a finite computation that for and . In particular there is no counterexample of type at most in degree . This gives infinite families of degrees for which the conjecture is not known and every counterexample has type at least : the degrees , the degrees for primes that are bad for degree , the degrees , , and for , , and explicit primes that are bad for these degrees, and the degrees and for all primes outside a finite set (for , including ). For we obtain the first degrees in which every counterexample has type at least : the degrees for , the degrees , the degrees for and the degrees for primes .
