Abstract
We prove that the mixed determinant of Borcea and Brändén has a spectrahedral hyperbolicity cone. More precisely, for Hermitian matrices of order , the hyperbolicity cone of is cut out by , where are explicit unital completely positive maps. We argue by induction on , adding one row and one column to every argument and expressing the logarithmic derivatives of as extremal eigenvalues. By compressing along polynomial boundary kernels, we reduce the order of the pencil to ; for one fixed positive semidefinite matrix a separate pencil yields the order . We also answer four problems of Borcea and Brändén negatively.
